These may not be the best records of 2011, but they're my favorites, or at least the ones that I listened to the most.
1. Ty Segall – Goodbye bread
Ty Segall could have simply made "Melted pt.2." and I would have been happy. This year I got way into ty segall, and the whole SF scene. This is a pop record, and will probably be the opus of this wave of garage rock revival.
2. Cults – Cults
She can't sing live, but she can put a record together. I listened to the abducted single around march and kept trying to find the album somewhere. I did eventually and listened to it and it became a favorite. #vcard
3. Drums – Portamento
I'll be honest, I only liked the "Lets go surfing ep" and hated everything after that. Until I actually listened to it. The drums keep churning out fantastic pop songs, and I've since listened to their self titled debut, and this record constantly. Solid efforts.
4. Seapony – Go with with me
I found out about seapony from Jeannette at the Miscreant's Mixtape, and it was right up my ally. Lo-fi girl pop songs about love and hate. Thats pretty much all there is to say about it, its fucking brilliant.
5. Raveonettes – Raven in the grave
I was stoked to hear the raveonettes were going to release a new album. Floored. I was expecting another lust lust lust, but that didn't happen. I didn't know they were about to break up, I didn't know much about the life of the Ravonettes other than the recharge and revolt single I listened to on their myspace. Anyway, my girlfriend at the time bought me this album for my birthday, and it is not only one of my favorite records, but also one of my favorite things. Good job Ravonettes, and thanks again Erin.
6. Yuck – Yuck
Its really tough to pinpoint who they're ripping off, of they're just ripping off every shoegaze band ever. I'm not complaining. Every shoegaze band sounds the same anyway, and these guys take the nu-gaze genre a step further. Very solid record that I wrote about previously this year, very great songs.
7. Real Estate – Days
Much like the drums, only to a more extreme extent, I fucking hated real estate. I thought they were another one of the fuzzy-buzz alt-boy surf rock bands that were going to cash in on the trend. Much like the rest of my life this year, I was wrong. Its a super great record. thats really all I can say, it just super great.
8. Hunx and his Punx - Too Young to be in love
I didn't really like Hunx and his punx first record, it was just a little too raw for my likings (at the time). This album, on the other hand, is polished. As polished as a lo-fi band can be anyway. Super great songs, and super production.
9. Wavves - Life Sux Ep
Wavves release a couple of newly recorded old songs, and a couple of stellar new songs. Good ep! Hopefully means a great new record is coming out!
10. Bass Drum of Death – GB city
They sound like Ty segall. They're great.
11. Tennis - Cape Dory
Probably one of the albums I listened to most this year. Its full of great songs and everything else. Its just magical. It is summer. It was 2011's Crazy for You, and Tennis didn't break through with it. Next year will be a big year for tennis, I'm sure.
Splashin' on into the new year,
Wesley
Honorable mentions; Red Fang – Murder the Mountains, The War on Drugs – Slave Ambient, the Vandelles- Summer Fling ep, Dum Dum girl – he gets me high ep, Blouse – Blouse, and Metronomy – The English Riviera
